This is an example of a successful exclusion. I apologize for the bad quality of the video, I was using my phone in one hand and releasing the skunk with the other hand. This skunk was under a house in Sonoma. The house was listed for sale and needed a termite inspection. Unfortunately, when the inspector entered the crawl space, he found he was not alone. A skunk had entered through a broken vent. In some cases a one-way door would work, but the customer needed to verify that the skunk was out so the inspection could move forward. I trapped the skunk, fixed the vent early in the morning, and this happy skunk was released in the same area again. Minimal stress to the animal, happy customer and the new homeowners buyers will love that the crawl space is sealed from future 'space invaders!' |

What is Exclusion?
The question is often asked, what is exclusion? In wildlife control, exclusion is simply using mechanical means to keep wildlife out. As mentioned in the blog portion of this site, most often this involves something on your house that has been broken or worn out. The most common example is a broken crawl space vent or sofit vent. Of course, depending on what pest is invading your space, the exclusion will look different. For example, with pigeons the use of bird netting or an innovative product like 'bird-slide' would be ideal. With bats, use of foam or caulk to seal accessible locations or even wire mesh will work great to successfully exclude them. Hardware cloth works great to seal out a number of vertebrate pests in a variety of situations.
Put directly, unless you exclude access to the area of the current invasion, the problem will re-occur. No matter how many times you take care of the symptoms, unless the cause is addressed, it will repeat.
